Japan got just a little bit bigger this week, as a volcano created a brand new island about 970 kilometers south of Tokyo. The newborn island is roughly 200 meters in diameter.

Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded in the world, slammed into the Philippines on Friday.

The US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said the storm, shortly before landfall, had maximum sustained winds of 314kph (170kn), with gusts up to 379kph (205kn).

Carlos Burle may have ridden the biggest wave of all time, beating the world record set by Garrett McNamara which was 23.77 metres (78 feet), measured from trough to crest, on 1 November 2011.

Burle, from Pernambuco in Brazil, had travelled to Portugal aiming to beat the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed by riding the Big Monday swell at Praia do Norte, Nazaré.

Konstantin Maltsev, 35, had arrived to Cyprus with his parents and brother on September 29. On this Sunday, he and his 63-year-old father were swimming in the Coral Bay area when they were both hit by a speedboat at about 12.30pm.
